Having a Home Office

When you work at home some times it can be difficult to get the right space to work in. I just moved my office upstairs in to one of our empty rooms. Reason being is because it used to be in the dining room downstairs. Yendis would bring the baby and lay him down in the dining room and she would tap my shoulder and ask me to do things, the tv would be too loud, etc… Generally it just interupted my work flow. So, I made some logical choices on the placement of my office.

  • My office must be away from main traffic of the house as to not cause minor distractions.
  • My office must have enough room for equipment.
  • Windows. I don’t like my office to have open windows so I put up shades. I like to easily be able to control the amount of light that comes in my office so I don’t get glare or anything like that.
  • My office had to have a door which I could close and not be interrupted by the others in the house. Those other people in my house had to know not to interfere with me unless it’s very important.
  • No children. You cannot have children near by your office. It will cause interruptions.
  • Small snacks and beverages. This is nice but I don’t currently have it. You should have snacks and beverages available to you in your office.
  • Cooperation. You need to have cooperation between you and the others in your household to maintain a good working environment and a good living environment side by side.

Also, remember, one of the advantages of working at home is being able to easily spend time with your family. So, take time out, no matter how busy you are to escape work and see the ones you love.
